The city of Zumaia, after Zarautz and San Sebastian and together with Deba is one the of the bigest municipalies in Guipuzcoa province. However, this importance comes together with it’s industrial capability and the amount of people that works in there. Taking into account Zumaia’s economical activities and it’s location in a valley makes it a very interesting target in terms of territorial development.

 

 

_Strategy

 

The Idea is to make a new metropoly producing a demographical growth in Zumaia and also, to improve the transportation systems of the nearby municipalies following the drainage basin of the valley of the Urola river; which in other words would mean that this new metropoly merges Zumaia with me municipality of Zestoa (arounf 20 Km in the south) and them to be consider part of one single thing.

As reference of this kind of metropolisation cities we can have an example in Bilbao; where a metropoly project was made in which the sea side (Getxo, Portugalete and Baracaldo) were connected by the Metro Bilbao, a very successful underground system that made very easy the transportation in an area of 40 Km. In bilbao metropoly 30 the drainage basin of the nervion river was also followed until the seaside.

 

_New Transportation Alternatives

 

Two new transport options are given as an alternative to the use of the car:

 

    _New Shuttle System. Whith whom the frecuencies are going to be imporved       to one shuttle every 15’. Two lines are going to be set.

 

       L1_ Zumaia-Zumaia Berri-Arroa Bekoa-Iraeta-Zestoa (route of 15 mins)

 

       L2_Zumaia-Zumaia Berri-Oikia-Etxadi-Etxezaharreta-Aizarnazabal-Iraeta-              Zestoa (route of 30 mins)

 

     _A ring bikeway.

_Development

 

The Shuttle systems would have 2 transfer points (Zumaia Berri and Iraeta) and these stragegical points are going to be used to propouse the growth of the metropoly. On the one hand Zumaia is going to have the landscape and the proximity to the sea as a target to turism and life quality spaces whereas Iraeta is going to be a service city to the workers from the formal Aizarnazabal Industrial area.
